christmas in july

A few of our favourite things

Christmas comes but once a year… unless you live in the Southern Hemisphere. In which case, July is the perfect opportunity to make the most of the crisp winter weather and create a magical night with your closest friends sharing good food, good wine… and bad Christmas jumpers. We’ve put together some our favourite elements to create a cracker of a Christmas night.

Christmas in a cup! Having this bubbling away on the stove as your guests arrive creates the most inviting aroma, and while there are many recipes out there for the perfect Glühwein, we think adding a splash of Brandy warms the cockles perfectly.

We love this version from The Spruce Eats

  • 1 bottle/750 mL red wine

  • 1 orange (peeled and sliced; keep peel to add zest to taste into the cooking pot)

  • 1/4 cup brandy

  • 8 to 10 cloves

  • 1/3 cup honey (or sugar)

  • 3 cinnamon sticks

  • 1 tsp. fresh ginger (or 2 tsp. ground ginger; allspice can be substituted)

Combine all ingredients in either a large pot or a slow cooker.
Gently warm the ingredients on low to medium heat (avoid boiling), for 20 to 25 minutes.
Stir occasionally to make sure that the honey or sugar has dissolved completely.

When the wine is steaming and the ingredients have been well blended it is ready to serve.

To avoid the post-Christmas dinner food coma (and kitchen clean up), a grazing table can be a beautiful option. Combine seasonal fruits and nuts with rich cheeses and sliced meats to cater for all your guests’ tastes.

And for those who - like us - consider dessert first, we have three words:

Chocolate. Grazing. Platter.

(You can thank us later.)

While it’s fun to bust out the tinsel and party hats - and read the bad bonbon jokes - Christmas in July is also chance to break with tradition and do something a little bit different when it comes to theming your party or event.

We recently collaborated with stylist and florist Chanele Rose on this photo shoot and love how all the elements came together.

There’s a nod to the traditional Christmas red with the berries and candles, but the sophisticated colour palette incorporates more muted tones to make the most of seasonal florals and bring a wintry warmth to your table setting.

(And complements our signature Bentwood Chairs perfectly!)

At the other end of the spectrum, taking inspiration from soft lighting elements in your decor can lift the mood and create a magical vibe, moving out of the Winter hibernation and towards the light.

We’re loving how the warmth of candles and fairylights offsets the icy winter whites, silvers and touches of green to create a fresh, uplifting feel.

(Plus our White Trestle Tables would work a treat).
